The Trials In Love

The Trials In Love. Why is this happening to me??? “O my life is in a mess. Nothing is going right for me. Has Allah forgotten me by treating me so? Should I complain, or should I accept it as a gift from my Creator?”

With the name of Allah most Beneficient ever Merciful

Once, Hazrath Khwaja Nizamudeen Aulia (RA) was offered two positions to choose from—Mehboob, or muhib. He wanted to know what muhib was, and so he was inspired to go out and meet a certain person. The next day, he sought out this person and asked him to explain to him what muhib was all about. The person asked him to come the following day. When Hazrath Khwaja Nizamudeen Aulia (RA) knocked on the person’s door the next day, he got no reply.

He inquired about the person from the neighbors and they told him that the person had died. On asking them where he was buried the neighbors replied that he was such a horrible person that the community felt that he was out of the fold of Islam so they threw his body in the jungle without even giving him the funeral bath.

Hazrath Khwaja Nizamudeen Aulia (RA) sought out the body in the jungle, and when he got to it he found birds of prey tearing away the flesh of the body.

By the Grace of Allah Subhanatallah, the person was able to speak and this is easy for the All Mighty. He said: “now you know what muhib is. No matter what my beloved does to me I am happy with it.”

Ah, the trials of love. This is one very important facet of true love which makes love a deep, irreversible, timeless bond that would never fade no matter what happens.

Once the people of the city of Ahmedabad were experiencing severe drought and some people went to a pious person and asked him to pray for rain. The person directed them towards another person. Now this person hardly behaved like a Muslim. He used to dress like a woman and these people were skeptical about going to such a person to ask him to pray for rain.

However, the severity of the circumstances forced them to go to this person. When they asked him to pray for rain, he said that Allah Subhanatallah never gives him anything he wants and to demonstrate this he washed one of his saris and put it out to dry.

As soon as he did this it began to rain. It rained for days and the city was now experiencing flooding. The people came back to this person and asked him to pray for the rain to stop. He went outside and brought in his sari which he had put out days ago to dry and the rain stopped.

Every person walking the path to Allah Subhanatallah would experience such circumstances at some point or the other and the greater the threshold of tolerance, the greater the person. We human beings learn through trial and error so we must make the best of these times to ponder and reflect.

Did not the Prophet ﷺ experience untold hardships? On his mission to the city of Taief, he was ridiculed and stoned by children.

Instead of complaining to Allah Subhanatallah, he instead thought that he did not do his job properly and he prayed to Allah Subhanatallah to make him a better preacher. “A raw diamond is cut and polished before it is fit to be on a ring.”

“Be sure that We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives and the fruits (of your toil) but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Who say when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah do we belong and to Him is our return” They are those on whom (descend) the blessings from their Lord. And Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance.” Al Quran Sura Al Baqaraa 2:155

The Prophet ﷺ has said that when Allah wishes good of a man and establishes love with him, He sends down upon him troubles and calamities and afflicts him with mishaps…. When there will be Resurrection Day the ‘pious’ (Those who prayed, paid zakaat, fasted and went for hajj) will be brought and their actions will be weighed in the Balance. Then those who were afflicted with calamities will be brought but their book of deeds will not be opened in presence. Rewards would be reined over them as calamities were thrown over them…. Page 118 vol 4 Ihya Ulum udeen.

You see: Muhib is where you love even it it means receiving suffering and pain for your love and mehboob is where you love and are blessed with favours upon favours in return.

Muhib is far more common and even the few Mehboobs go through phases of muhib. The lesson in muhib is patience, and patience in trying times is a great achievement. Here are a few verses that describe the way in which Hazrath Moosa (AS) was trained by way of trials and tribulations:

“…And (it came to pass that) you killed a person, but We delivered you from anguish. Then We purified you with various trials and you stayed for a number of years among the people of Midian. It was only then when you were properly groomed and came up to the standard (set by us). And I, (having made you perfect,) have chosen you for Myself. Go you and your brother (Aaron) with My Messages and do not be remiss in remembering Me.” Al Quran Sura Ta Ha 20:40

Peace and Salutations be upon Muhammad Salallahu Alayhe Wasallam.
