Muhammad PBUH & Self Control

A large part of the teachings of Muhammad, peace be upon him, is about learning to know ourselves so that we can be better able to control our desires. If we can acheive this, then our desires do not control us, but we control it – we become the master and this is developing ourselves and growing our characters and personalities to become the best of creation that God has destined us to be. This is the first article,  “Muhammad PBUH & Self Control” of a series articles in this chapter.

With the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful,

When the elite of Mecca offered him wealth and status in an attempt to stop his mission, he controlled his urge for gaining money and turned it down. When he was covered in blood at the lowest part of his mission, the angel Gibrieel AS offered to destroy the people that did this to him but he controlled his urge to feel self-pity and instead prayed that they be guided. When, as a leader of Medina, a beautiful captive woman insulted him and turned down his marriage before consummation, he controlled his pride and power to take what he wanted but instead gave her gifts and set her free. When entering Mecca as the leader of a powerful army he controlled his urge to show off so he rode on a donkey with his head hung low. When Hind, the woman who murdered his uncle, sought pardon he forgave, although he was in a position and had the rights to extract revenge very easily.

The Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said that following one’s passion is one of three vices which will cause destruction in the hereafter (hell). Al Hadis 1:4:43:197w.

This is so because Self-control is so important that it forms a part of having faith and having faith is what will give us success in the hereafter. Self-control also purifies our conduct and makes us better people. The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

“the dearest to me amongst you is he who is the best of you in conduct” Al Hadis 1:4:6:82.

He also said:

“He whose conduct is bad and harsh shall not enter paradise.” Al Hadis 1:4:6:84

This chapter covers a few articles on Self control:

Peace and salutations be upon Allah’s Messengers who are responsible for guiding humanity throughout time. Ameen.
